Lord of War (15)

Acquired-taste Nicholas Cage stars as a gunrunner in the latest film by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show, The Terminal), which sheds some light on the decidedly grey issue of arms dealing.
Cage plays Yuri Orlov, a Ukrainian immigrant who grows up in Little Odessa, New York and builds a successful business in the arms trade.

Along the way he marries a beautiful model from his hometown in the appealing shape of Bridget Moynahan (I, Robot) and travels around the world making shady deals with third world dictators. There is no small amount of immorality, guns and beautiful women to watch, as well as Cage cleverly outwitting his law-enforcing nemesis, Ethan Hawke.

However, if you're thinking this sounds like a typical Cage action flick in which he realises the error of his ways and blows up some "goddamn terrorists", then you're as wrong as I was. Instead, this film is a fairly daring insight into the morality and dangers of supplying people with weapons to commit terrible atrocities, which, if not legal, is often a grey area in the eyes of the law.

It's surprising, in fact, that this film has been made at all in the current political climate, because while it isn't exactly critical of America and its policies, it is refreshingly honest. It turns out that this film was actually made with very little American assistance, as the US studios refused to fund it and the producers eventually had to secure foreign finance.

The finished product, however, turns out to be a little on the average side, but it is still an unusual and pretty unique cross between a mainstream film (like Swordfish) and a serious one (like Hotel Rwanda). It is always enjoyable though and certainly gets full marks for effort in my book.
