Zodiac (15)

David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) is back behind the camera, and his latest film sounds every bit as dark as the films for which he has become famous. Based on a true story, Zodiac follows the lives of journalists and police officers who are trying to uncover the identity of a serial killer.

The serial killer is the eponymous Zodiac, who began murdering people in California in 1969. There was no pattern to the killings, but the Zodiac was good enough to send a series of cryptic clues to newspapers in San Francisco for them to print on their front page.

Most of the Zodiac's murders are shown during the film, and some of them are extremely brutal. One in particular will have you wondering how this film escaped an 18 certificate. However, the vast majority of the film is squarely focused on the journalists and police officers as they investigate the case. This content, together with its 1970's setting, is really reminiscent of films like All The President's Men and JFK – which is probably a good thing, because they are great films.

The core of the story itself is a little hackneyed (police trying to track down a serial killer with no apparent motive or pattern) and has been seen in many movies before such as Jennifer Eight and Dirty Harry. In fact, many believe the latter to be directly influenced by the real life Zodiac case that was taking place at the time.

This film, however, is technically very accomplished – good direction, dialogue and acting and so on. It runs a little long for comfort, but that is because there is a lot of content to cover in this true story. So overall, it's definitely worth watching and has some genuinely fascinating subject matter, but I wouldn't be in a rush to see it at the cinema.
