4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (PG)
Directed by: Tim Story
Reviewed by: Paul Fonz

For those of you unfamiliar with the Silver Surfer, the four in the title of this film refers to the Fantastic Four, the Marvel gang of superheroes who first appeared in comics in 1961. They're a group of friends and family with a variety of special powers and an arch enemy in the shape of Dr Victor von Doom. You may remember the Fantastic Four film released in 2005, and if you do, I'm sorry for you, because it was pretty awful.

The good news is, this sequel is better, because it has the Silver Surfer in it, and he is cool. Other than that though, this movie is every bit as bad as the first one for exactly the same reasons.

The story, for the record, involves the Silver Surfer rocking up at planet Earth and causing some havoc while Reed Richards and Sue Storm try to plan their wedding day. Then Dr Doom turns up and does his best to really irritate everyone else in the film. Then the Fantastic Four save the day (whoops, ruined the ending).

To say the plot is thin on substance is putting it mildly. The plotlines generally involve incredibly clichéd comic book staples, such as the gang discussing splitting up, but realising they work better as a team, superheroes swapping powers and the old favourite, attempting to put your own life/happiness before your responsibilities as a superhero and bad guy redemption. Yawn.

What could have bumped this film up a few points on the scale would have been the Silver Surfer doing a lot of cool flying around and fighting people and so on. However, there isn't very much of that, and the most exciting bits of the film can all be seen in the trailers. Embarrassingly, they are usually edited together much better in the trailers than in the film too.

I sincerely hope people don't go and see this film so they spare us all having to watch a third Fantastic Four film.
