Run, Fat Boy, Run (12A)
Directed by: David Schwimmer

My regular reader (hi mum) will know that while I think most comedy films these days are about as funny as contracting E.coli, I do actively seek out anything starring British funny man Simon Pegg. Any project he is involved in seems to turn out well (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Spaced, Big Train, Mission: Impossible III), and so I eagerly trotted off to see his latest film, hoping for something between mild entertainment and outright delectable hilarity.

As usual, he hasn't disappointed me, although Run, Fat Boy, Run definitely appears in the "mild entertainment" bubble of my Pegg-vendiagram. The storyline is simple enough: five years ago, Dennis (Simon Pegg) was all set to marry his beautiful and pregnant girlfriend Libby (Thandie Newton), but has a last minute panic attack and runs off on the wedding day.

In time he comes to regret this decision, and realises his mistake when he finds out that Libby is dating rich, handsome American Whit (Hank Azaria playing another total git). Through an unfortunate turn of events, fat and unfit Dennis sets out to prove to Libby that he no longer runs away from his problems, by running the London Marathon - which is only three weeks away.

David Schwimmer directs this, his first film to be released at the cinema, and after all those years on Friends, he knows a thing or two about filming comedy and romance. Pegg, Azaria and Dylan Moran have all played similar characters before and their performances are not only spot-on, you really get the impression it's a film made by a group of friends having a good laugh.

Run, Fat Boy, Run is very funny in places, always amusing, and above all, it's good, harmless, lovely fun, and at 95 minutes, it doesn't outstay its welcome. Not a bad way to spend an hour and a half at all.
