Be Kind Rewind (12A)
Directed by: Michael Gondry
Reviewed by: Paul Fonz

Mos Def plays Mike, the assistant at a small town video store that is falling down and going out of business. When the owner of the store (Danny Glover) goes out of town, he leaves Mike in charge. But of course, this wouldn't be much of a comedy if it stopped there. Mike's friend Jerry (Jack Black) inadvertently manages to magnetise himself and walk around the video store, erasing all the tapes in the process. Look, it happens, alright?

Rather than admit what has gone wrong to the boss and the customers, Mike and Jerry decide the best thing to do is make a new version of each film a customer asks for with the props they have at their disposal.

You're probably imagining at this point, as I did, ninety minutes of Jack Black mucking about in front of a camcorder, spoofing every movie under the sun. It could be funny, it might miss the mark, who knows? Well, that actually isn't what happens. After the pair make their first couple of films (which are much more accurate than you might expect), we are treated to little more than a brief montage of movie spoofs.

The rest of the film is, rather bizarrely, about Fats Wallah and good old fashioned community spirit. The film as a whole is extremely light on jokes, meaning Jack Black becomes more and more annoying, as he tries to spice up his plain dialogue with his unusual delivery.

Michael Gondry, best known by far for directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, writes and directs this one, and it's a bit of an oddball. It certainly isn't the low-brow comedy you might expect, but neither does it really fit into any other genre. It's a style that's hard to pin down, but ultimately, it's simply not that good. It's hard to dislike, but that's not enough to make a film worth watching.
