The new kings of American comedy just won't stop churning out new films, and while they're all fairly similar, they are at least entertaining. The latest from Judd Apatow and his friends (the guys behind The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad) certainly fits into their now familiar formula, but it's reasonably funny and generally good fun.

The protagonist, as usual, is a bit of an overweight loser, in this case musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segel). Peter has been going out with one of the hottest TV celebrities in America, Sarah Marshall (Kristen bell, who really is one of the hottest TV celebrities having starred in the underrated show Veronica Mars in real life). However, he has become pretty listless and lazy, and at the start of the film Sarah Marshall unceremoniously dumps him.

Peter is heartbroken, but he decides to take a holiday in Hawaii to help get over it. The comedy premise, of course, is that Sarah Marshall is staying in the same hotel as him with her new boyfriend, British rock star Aldous Snow (Russell Brand).

You can probably imagine how the rest goes: Peter starts off heartbroken but slowly falls for another girl (Mila Kunis) and turns his life around. There's plenty of nudity-related humour, awkward situations and strange characters to laugh at, but even so, this isn't hilarious all the way through. In fact, as much as I despise him, Russell Brand is probably the best thing in this film, largely because the director (Nicholas Stoller) has toned his usual performance down a lot.

Essentially it's a more low-brow version of Swingers – it's not as good a film, but it's very accessible and has the same easy-to-watch feel as the other Judd Apatow films. Overall, well worth watching if you feel like a bit of comedy in your life.
