Love Actually, penned and directed by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill) is a series of eight intertwined stories, each depicting different aspects of love. Some of the stories in this romantic comedy are less predicable than others, some are fairly upsetting, but most are designed to make the viewer laugh, feel happy and get in the spirit of Christmas.

With an ensemble cast including Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon and Martin Freeman, it's hard to see how this film could fail to rake in big money at the box office. However, while none of the jokes falls flat, few of them will manage to stick in your memory longer than a few hours. The classic lines that made Four Weddings and a Funeral such a surprise smash hit are absent from this piece, leaving just the romantic storylines and Christmas appeal to haul in the crowds.

By all means see this film, especially with your partner, but don't expect more than a couple of hours of forgettable entertainment and a seemingly interminable cheesy ending that builds throughout the last hour of the film. Dare I say it's one for the girls? I think so.
