Something's Gotta Give (12A)
Directed by: Nancy Meyers

When a screenwriter pens a film specifically for Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, they must be terrifically ambitious and they'd better make sure their script is very good if they really want their vision to become a reality. Luckily for veteran writer and director Nancy Meyers (Private Benjamin, Father Of The Bride), her ambition is more than matched by her talent as a filmmaker.

Diane Keaton plays Erica Barry, a famous playwright who has used her work to distract her from her lonely, but successful lifestyle ever since she got divorced. However, her life is turned upside down one weekend when her daughter (Amanda Peet) brings home her latest boyfriend, sixty-three year old Harry Sanborn (Nicholson).

Harry is a philandering businessman who has never slept with a woman over thirty and certainly doesn't intend to ever start a serious relationship. However, Erica and Harry are as surprised as each other when they are forced to spend time together and sparks begin to fly!

Anyone who has watched a really good old-fashioned love story lately, like The Apartment, will probably have thought "they don't make 'em like this anymore". Well, this film is here to prove us all wrong. It is a wonderfully crafted romance story about why people are so afraid of the ups and downs of love. The script is excellent and the first half of the film is absolutely hilarious. The all-star cast give superb performances, including the often-wooden Keanu Reeves who plays Harry's doctor and another love interest for Erica!

Whilst brilliant, this film is flawed by its irregularity. The first hour or so is extremely funny, but it then dissolves into a more serious drama and while both sections are equally entertaining, it does feel a bit uneven. The dearth of humour towards the end also draws attention to the fact that the film drags on a bit, and perhaps could do with being ten or twenty minutes shorter. That aside, films like this simply do not come along often enough and therefore Something's Gotta Give is a must-see.
