Hitch (12A)

There probably isn't a straight man alive that hasn't preyed for some help in wooing a lady at one time or another in his life. The fact is there are few things more daunting than approaching a woman you really want to impress and trying to create a connection out of thin air. If only there were someone you could hire to help engineer a meeting with the object of your desire, to help sweep the woman you love off her feet and stop you from making all the sweaty, nervous mistakes we all know so well. In this movie, that man is Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, the Date Doctor.

Hitch claims it takes just three dates to bowl a woman over and make her yours forever, and he can be discreetly hired to help you, if he thinks you're deserving enough. However, even his skills are challenged when a rather portly accountant wants to date Allegra Cole, a rich, beautiful, famous, glamorous It girl who is hounded by the paparazzi.

Things are complicated further when Hitch starts to fall for Sara (Eva Mendes), a workaholic gossip columnist who loves to dish the dirt on Allegra and her relationships.

Will Smith is one of the most charismatic actors around today, and his gift for comedy is unquestionable. The performance he gives in this film is nothing short of perfect – he manages to be hilariously funny, charming and extremely likeable, thanks in no small part to a decent script. At last we have a romantic comedy that isn't sadly undernourished in the comedy department, and not too sickly or cloying either.

There's not much more to say about this film really – it has a fairly good soundtrack featuring some Motown classics, it's very funny, it will appeal to everyone and is downright enjoyable. The storyline isn't exactly packed with surprises, but nevertheless the result is an amusing and enteraining commercial film for mainstream audiences, and one that I will almost certainly be adding to my personal collection when it is released on DVD. Well worth seeing.
